Wendy Rides an Elephant
This enchanting book is an essential addition to every child’s library, cultivating a passion for learning, encouraging bravery, and inspiring boundless creativity.
This tale follows 11-year-old Wendy in the summer of 1971 when the Barnum & Bailey Circus visited Toronto. Wendy, spurred by her mom’s discovery of a poster design contest in the local paper, crafted a winning entry with vibrant supplies from Cole’s bookstore.
Her grand prize, featuring a surreal elephant ride at the Canadian National Exhibition, turned Wendy’s joyous circus day into the most exhilarating moment of her youth, captured in a home movie by her dad and creating enduring memories with her family, despite the promised toys.

Voyage to the Moon and Mars
In the magical summer of 1969, Wendy and her family embark on an unforgettable transatlantic journey from Toronto to Rotterdam aboard the grand S.S. Statendam. Along the way, they experience the iconic sights of New York City, including the Statue of Liberty, and witness one of humanity’s greatest achievements—the Apollo 11 moon landing—on a black-and-white TV in the ship’s lounge.
Through Wendy’s youthful eyes, the adventure is filled with excitement and discovery, from exploring the ship’s many decks to savoring 8¢ MARS bars that become a treasured treat during the voyage. While babysitting her younger sisters, Wendy carefully constructs a cardboard model of the Apollo 11 lunar lander, piecing together her own little slice of history.
As the Statendam sails through the Atlantic, Wendy’s journey is as much about the wonder of space exploration as it is about family, freedom, and the small joys that make an adventure truly magical. Combining history, nostalgia, and whimsy, this delightful tale captures the spirit of a young girl’s voyage during a summer when the whole world looked to the stars.

“Wendy has written a truly enjoyable book about her life, it’s fun, it’s sad, it’s human. Wendy is an acquaintance and learning all the things she has done and everything she has dealt with has been an eye opener and a treat.”

“This is a wonderful and personal account of a Canadian classical musician. It’s written with candor and heart, and anyone will be able to connect with it who has grown up as the child of immigrant parents, or who has had personal struggles with weight in any way. I thoroughly enjoyed it.“

“I loved this book!! It’s a delightful and quick read.Wendy takes you through her many-faceted life, from her upbringing in Toronto by Immigrant Dutch parents. Inspirational, meaningful, and reads as if she’s sitting in the room with you. Trauma and despair based on her weight issues abound, but won over by her indomitable spirit. Highly recommended!“
